The magnetic response of the ionosphere to pulsed HF heating
نویسندگان
چکیده
[1] It shown theoretically and confirmed for the first time experimentally that the magnetic response of the lower auroral ionosphere to pulsed ionospheric HF heating depends critically on the parameter T/Th, where T is the pulse duration and Th is the time required for the electron temperature to reach its steady state value. Theoretical analysis shows that the strength and pulse shape of the near-zone magnetic field on the ground depends not only on the traditional quasi-static near-field term, but also on a term which depends on the derivative of the current (i.e., the impulse response of the ionosphere). Results from newly-conducted experiments using the HAARP transmitter in Gakona, Alaska are presented that verify our model, and it is shown that for T Th the magnetic flux on the ground due to the impulse response is 10–15 dB larger than the flux due to the quasistatic term. An interhemispheric model of artificial ionospheric ducts
[1] A duct in Earth’s ionosphere is characterized by density gradients perpendicular to the magnetic field, which enhance refractive indices and act as waveguides to whistler-range waves. Interhemispheric ducts along magnetic field lines have implications for the transmission of ELF radio waves across the globe. Strong HF ionospheric heating has been shown to create a depletion of electrons at ...
متن کاملNumerical study of the generation and propagation of ultralow-frequency waves by artificial ionospheric F region modulation at different latitudes
Powerful high-frequency (HF) radio waves can be used to efficiently modify the upper-ionospheric plasmas of the F region. The pressure gradient induced by modulated electron heating at ultralow-frequency (ULF) drives a local oscillating diamagnetic ring current source perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, which can act as an antenna radiating ULF waves. In this paper, utilizing the HF he...
متن کاملModel for artificial ionospheric duct formation due to HF heating
[1] Strong electron heating by the injection of highly powerfu l HF waves can lead to the format ion of ionospheric plasma density perturbations that stretch along the magnetic field lines. Those density perturbations can serve as ducts for guiding natural and artificial ELF/VLF waves. This paper presents a theoretical model of duct formation due to HF heating of the ionosphere. The model is ba...

[1] High-frequency cross-modulation is employed to probe the D region ionosphere during HF heating experiments at the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) observatory. We have adapted Fejer’s well-known cross-modulation probing method to determine the extent of ionospheric conductivity modification in the D region ionosphere with high (5 sec) time resolution. We demonstrate th...

This paper describes the results of a preliminary study to determine the eective heating and cooling time constants of ionospheric currents in a simulated modulated HF heating, `beam painting' con®guration. It has been found that even and odd harmonics of the fundamental ELF wave used to amplitude modulate the HF heater are sourced from dierent regions of the ionosphere which support signi®ca...
